TENET

A bit like last year’s Joker – do you still remember the world pre-Covid? – Tenet was wrapped in the golden mysticism of mystery.  But what is the mystery?  What does Tenet mean?  What will it be about?  At the initial stolen glimpses, or better those supplied by Warner Bros., now just part of a larger enterprise, everyone wide-eyed  “Ooohhh… Nolan’s new work…”  What is this story that speaks about time?  And in this Covid era the images of protagonists wearing oxygen masks fed  eager and morbid curiosity.

Like Joker, born and designed around Joaquin Phoenix, without whom would have been a colossal heap of trash, uselessly and stupidly dark, this Tenet from the prophet of Batman reveals itself, in reality to be what it is.  It’s not the new Terminator; that deals with the concept of beneficial interference with time.  It’s not the new Matrix where the paradoxical similarity to our world produced a new way of thought about a parallel life and the conspiracy behind it but rather, a passable action flick to be watched without the pretense of a life changing historical event.

The story’s protagonist (the actor’s name escapes me) is actually named The Protagonist and virtually combats to achieve the character, but drowns in mediocrity as an actor and character.  The villain, Kenneth Branagh holds his own.  A special mention for the bony Elizabeth Debicki – sexy as ever in a way I would never have expected.  Nolan however, doesn’t get the job done.  The concept of the “principle of entropy” is poorly explained and remains unclear even after 180 minutes of boredom.  And the title.  What does Tenet mean?  I didn’t understand it and don’t know if anyone made the observation that it’s a palindrome (a word that reads the same both backward and forward).  Therefore it goes back and forth – like time – claiming to have understood something as you leave the theater.

I repeat, enjoyable if watched superficially.  Undecipherable if you’re looking to give Nolan the palm of the prophet
